La Vinuela is positioned between two of the most important roads of the region, those of Alhama and Casabermeja. The region of Andalucia is famous for having some of the most spectacular scenery but none more so than La Vinuela which has La Vinuela lake, a man made reservoir where you can see all the way across Sierra Tejeda and the Boquete de Zafarraya mountains. The landscape itself is stunning and boasts many olive plantations which are sustained by the reservoir.
The town is sometimes referred to as "The oasis of the Axarquía," and dates from the 16th century. It originally grew around an inn on what was then known as the royal road between Vélez and Granada. The inn still in exists on the main street of the town, and it stood in a small vineyard known as "La Viñuela".
